Course Descriptions for ASL As a World Language
This course introduces students to American Sign Language (ASL) as a World Language. The purpose of this course is to provide exposure to beginning sign production and comprehension in an engaging and fun environment. Everyday conversation is the centerpiece of each lesson. Topics revolve around sharing information about ourselves and our everyday lives i.e., family, school, hobbies, and interests. Grammar is introduced in context, with an emphasis on question and answering skills. Students gain a basic understanding of Deaf culture and education in the Deaf community. There will be videos and books followed by discussions to gain a preview into the Deaf World.
This course introduces students to American Sign Language as a World Language. The purpose of ASL 1 is to provide a solid foundation of ASL production and comprehension. Grammar is presented by units with careful attention to provide context for learning. There are 6 units: Introducing Oneself; Exchanging Personal Information; Discussing Living Situations; Talking about Family; Discussing Activities; and ASL storytelling. Students learn conversational strategies to help sustain conversation in ASL. Interaction provides opportunities for students to practice what they’ve learned. Students gain a deeper understanding of Deaf Culture and education in the Deaf community. A variety of materials will be used to broaden their understanding in the Deaf World and ASL.
This course builds on students’ existing beginner foundation in American Sign Language as a World Language. The purpose of ASL 2 is continued growth of ASL production and comprehension. Grammar continues to be presented by units with pacing targeted to provide context for learning. Students will develop greater fluency and confidence in ASL, particularly when giving and receiving directions, describing people and things, and making requests. Students deepen their understanding of Deaf Culture and education in the Deaf community and some controversial community subjects related to disabilities, language and culture are introduced. A variety of materials will be used to broaden their understanding in the Deaf World and ASL.
This course enhances students’ expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language. The purpose of ASL 3 is to further develop and refine the production and comprehension knowledge acquired in ASL 1 and 2. Additional more complex grammar study is presented through thematic units, with careful attention to providing contextual learning experiences. These units cover an increased level of vocabulary, crafting longer ASL narratives, and recognizing the subtleties of native users’ storytelling styles. Students are exposed to various language functions and contexts in ASL. Additionally, students refine their receptive skills by engaging in conversations that cover diverse topics and utilize varying registers. A diverse array of materials is utilized to deepen students’ understanding of ASL and Deaf Culture. Project-based activities are incorporated to reinforce learning.
In this course, students increase confidence and fluency by practicing advanced grammar, expanding vocabulary, and using ASL in a variety of real-life situations. Students learn to express opinions, explain complex ideas, and share personal experiences clearly and naturally through sign language. The course also introduces translation between ASL and English. Students will explore how messages are interpreted between the two languages, learning to match tone, intent, and meaning while respecting cultural differences. Activities will include translating short stories, everyday conversations, and current events. Students deepen their understanding of Deaf culture through hands-on projects, storytelling, and class discussions focused on identity, social justice, and the lived experiences of Deaf individuals. Real-world materials—such as vlogs, interviews, and articles from the Deaf community—will support learning throughout the course.

We are pleased to offer American Sign Language courses to meet a foreign language requirement for interested students. We currently offer 5 courses, in both a live or hybrid model. Though the program follows the Online Academy calendar, asynchronous work can be provided during off times. Information about scheduling and pricing options is discussed individually with school districts or other partner programs.
