Learn ASL at the ASD Online Academy

We are pleased to offer American Sign Language courses to meet a foreign language requirement for interested students. We currently offer three courses, which include both a live or hybrid model. Though the program follows the Online Academy calendar, asynchronous work can be provided during off times. Information about scheduling and pricing options is discussed individually with school districts or other partner programs.

Course Descriptions for ASL As a World Language

This course meets for 120 contact hours according to the schedule agreed upon between the Online Academy and partner program.

This course continues students’ expressive and receptive skills in American Sign Language.  The purpose of ASL 2 is to build on what was learned in ASL 1 with production and comprehension.  Additional grammar is presented by units with careful attention to provide context for learning. 

These units include:

  • Describing People and Things
  • Making Requests and Asking for Advice
  • Describing Places
  • Giving Opinions about Others
  • Discussing Plans and Goals
  • ASL storytelling

Students learn grammatical strategies to explain their message accordingly. Students work in groups to expand expressive and receptive skills. A variety of materials are used for students to gain a deeper understanding of ASL and Deaf Culture. Students  project-based activities: creating ASL handshape stories and presentations on people in the Deaf Community.

This course introduces students to American Sign Language as a World Language.  The purpose of ASL 1 is to provide a solid foundation of ASL production and comprehension.  Grammar is presented by units with careful attention to provide context for learning. 

There are 6 units:

  • Introducing Oneself
  • Exchanging Personal Information
  • Discussing Living Situation
  • Talking about Family
  • Telling about Activities
  • ASL Storytelling

Students learn conversational strategies to help sustain conversation in ASL.  Interaction provides opportunities for students to practice what they’ve learned.  Students gain a deeper understanding of Deaf Culture and education in the Deaf community. A variety of materials will be used to broaden their understanding in the Deaf World and ASL. 

This course meets for 60 contact hours according to the schedule agreed upon between the Online Academy and partner program.

This course introduces students to American Sign Language (ASL) as a World Language. The purpose of this course is to provide exposure to beginning sign production and comprehension in an engaging and fun environment.  Everyday conversation is the centerpiece of each lesson. Topics revolve around sharing information about ourselves and our everyday lives i.e. family, school, hobbies and interests. Grammar is introduced in context, with an emphasis on question and answering skills. Students gain a basic understanding of Deaf culture and education in the Deaf community.  There will be videos and books followed by discussions to get a preview of what it’s like in the Deaf World.
